Tomatoes are part of the nightshade family of vegetables, and green parts of the plant including unripe tomatoes, stems, and leaves contain toxins called solanine and tomatine. Cats should avoid pasta sauce, due to other ingredients common in pasta sauce that are toxic to cats, such as garlic and onion. Cats can eat bite-size pieces of red, ripe, plain tomatoes, without the stem or leaves.
Caution: Cats lack the enzymes required for digesting carbohydrates, therefore, their diet should not exceed 2% of carbohydrates or sugars. Read more.
