Olives are not toxic to cats, and can be safe in small quantities. Cats should never be given olives with pits, as they can cause choking or gastrointestinal obstructions, and can crack teeth. Canned or pickled olives should be avoided due to their often excessive amounts of sodium, which is unhealthy for cats and can even lead to toxicity. Olives that have seasonings, oils, or have been soaked in alcohol should never be given to cats. Olives are high in fat, and ingesting high amounts of fat can cause gastrointestinal upset. Cats can eat small amounts of plain, unsalted, unseasoned, pitted olives.
