Oatmeal can be a safe food for cats. The high fiber content of oatmeal can cause your cat gastrointestinal upset, including gas, diarrhea, and vomiting, especially if your cat is not used to eating fiber. Cats should only eat plain oatmeal. Some oatmeal flavorings and add-ins, like raisins, are toxic to cats, and usually have high amounts of sugar, which they should not eat. Cats should not eat instant oatmeals. Cats should only eat cooked oatmeal made with water, not dairy. Cats are very sensitive to dairy, and their bodies have a difficult time breaking down lactose. Cats can eat small amounts of plain, unflavored, unsweetened oatmeal cooked with water, not dairy.
Caution: Cats lack the enzymes required for digesting carbohydrates, therefore, their diet should not exceed 2% of carbohydrates or sugars. Read more.
